Homework Feb. 25

1. I feel as if his smile is a smile of forgiveness because that is what the grandmother is trying to teach them, she tries to teach them about forgiving.
2. Nair's aunts are not behaving differently because they are both fighting over the will. And they both will only speak to Nair separately and they do not want to speak to each other.
3. All the women did not deal with the granduncles theft of the grandmother's inheritance in the right way. They stop talking to the granduncles, but a wise response to them would be forgiveness because why would you want to die angry at your own brothers.
4. I do think that new laws would have prevented this because they forged a signature and changed the great grandfathers wishes. If they had not forged the signature and changes the will all the family problems would have been prevented.
6. My interviewee had a similar story retaining to "Till Death Do Us Part" because he had a best friend at the time and his best friend wanted to buy a car but did not have good credit so they put in under the interviewees name. The interviewee never told his wife about this until he got caught. He got caught because him and his best friend stopped being friends for various reasons and he stopped making payments to the car which started messing up the interviewee's credit score. The wife was furious about this but they ended up working it out and how if he had told her from the beginning she would have helped him.
6. I kind of agree with this quote because it is saying  that when someone dies , what they leave behind is a big thing because it could be extremely valuable or it could help you out in your life, such as leaving behind a house. I also agree with the quote because it is saying that if they leave something behind fr you in the will or something it causes you less pain in grief, I agree with this because if someone important to me died and left something behind for me I would feel as if I have a part of them so it would probably help me with the grieving.

Does Money Really Make You Happy?
The word “happiness”, as employed by such psychologist as David G. Meyers is, in the end, too vague to be of much use in determining the real effects of money. Thankfully the authors of “Lethal Consumption” avoid the “Happiness” trap. I agree with the statement because the word happiness is not defined enough for it to have any effect. Money can definitely help you achieve your goals, provide for your future and make life more enjoyable, but having this stuff will not promise one satisfaction. Happiness is to vague of a word to determine the real effects that money has on people.
Many people believe that money makes everything better, and if you have money your life will be easy and happy all the time. Although, money does make life less stressful for some people, it is not always a good thing.  David G. Meyers states in "The Funds, Friends, and Faith of Happy People", that happiness does not fully show the effects of money well. Having a lot of money will not mean that you have everything you want in the world; you may get the materialistic things covered but the emotional things such as love and family might be harder to obtain. A person can have very little money and be happier than a person who is really wealthy.
According to PsychologyToday.com, it states, “90% of people earning at least 250,000 dollars call themselves very happy, while just 42% of those earning under 30,000 dollars say they are happy.” This statistic shows that even the people who do not make that much money is still happier with their lives just as the wealthy people are.  However, having money can make life easier, it can not buy you happiness. You can still be happy without having a lot of money; focusing to hard on the money can cause negative outcomes such as health, mental, and marital status problems.
One of the biggest causes of stress in today’s society is the one thing most people treasure the most, money. Money stress happens to almost everybody. Every single day things get more and more expensive; minimum wage goes up, gas prices go up, houses prices go up, and so much more. It is sometimes hard to keep up with society when everyone wants the latest things to fit in, and that puts stress on everything else. People try and work so hard to make the most money that they can to live what they so call it, “The Good life”. In the article, “The Good Life”, Roper Center University created a survey which showed that back in the day people were not as materialistic as they are now. Now people think that “The Good Life” is having a second television in your home, or traveling abroad. Some couples will spend their entire marriage or relationship stressed out about making enough money so they can have all the good and high end stuff. On the other hand, most people are content with the money they make and they work with it, because they are not stressing out so much about trying to meet these standards that people are trying to set. According to CBSNews.com it states, “Three out four parents and adults younger than 50 said money is somewhat or very a significant source of stress.” This research describes that money is sometimes a really big problem, and can even cause problems in a family. I feel if people are too focused on the money they will never find true happiness in life.
Money can make people happy, but having a lot of money does not mean that your life will be easier than a poor person’s life. People who have a lot of money can still have very hard lives. The more money that one makes, the more it gets to their head and gets to them mentally. When making more money, you are going to want to spend it and buy all the latest stuff to fit in. Having cash can turn a person into someone who only focuses on the material things in life. Money becomes too much pressure when you have more than what you know what to do with. In "The Funds, Friends, and Faith of Happy People", David G. Meyers makes a reference to Titanic. He talks about how in this movie passengers could not escape death just because they were wealthier than the other passengers. This is the same thing in today’s world, just because a person has a lot of money does not mean they are going to get everything they want, life just does not work that way. Also, according to David G. Meyers, he states, “Even very rich people – the Forbes 100 wealthiest Americans surveyed by Diener, Horwitz, and Emmons (1985) – are only slightly happier than the average American.”  This describes that people with less money can be happier than rich people because they do not have all the extra pressures and stress of having a lot of money.
Money does not buy happiness for people. Some may think that it does, but it is not real happiness. According to The HuffingtonPost.com, “Money may be a more effective tool for reducing sadness than enhancing happiness.” This quote describes that people are mistaking having money for happiness. Money does reduce sadness because we need money to have a roof over our heads and to eat. Money can buy you all the materialistic things in the world, but it can not buy you emotions. One may have a lot of money but they may not have someone to love. Money can not buy you love, so what’s the point of having all this money? All this depends on the person and their personality, some people think that they do not need love, but when it comes down to it and they are looking for it, they will not have it because all they cared about was the money. People who do not have that much money are very happy with their lives because they have everything else, like love and family. Money will not get you all the happiness that you need and want.
Does money really make everything better? Money will make you less sad but it will not make you happier. Money comes with a lot of bad affects to it. It causes a lot of stress, which can lead to health problems and family problems. Just because one has a lot of money does not mean that they have everything they want. If all you have is money and that’s all you care about, you are not going to be happy. There are so many other things that are more important than money. There are many people in this world who are very happy with having little money because they have everything else they could ask for, like family and love. People look at life in different ways, but I believe that happiness is to vague of a word to determine the real effects that money has on people. You need money to live, but you do not need a lot of money to be happy, one should always stay humble in life because if you are not it can make living life a very stressful event.

Feb. 16 Homework

1.  I think Melanie is referring to how poor she was and how she never really had indoor plumbing when she was younger and that was the way she grew up which shaped her into who she is because she was afraid of what people would say.
2. I think when she says this statement that she is talking about the people who are judging , the people who are mean and make fun of poor people. In the text she states " If a white trash child made the mistake of catching a softball during recess, the other children made an elaborate show of wiping it clean before they would touch it." This goes to show how low and sad these people are and they are the ones who should be ashamed.
5. I do not think that Scheller would have experienced poverty the same way is she had lived in the kind of Thai village Murray describes because his was an imaginary thing that he was using to get people to picture themselves in poverty. but Melanie's poverty was real and can not really compare.
6. Scheller's poverty experience mostly resembles Barbara's story because they both had very little money and very little things. They were not materialistic at all and they both lived in a small apartment.
Page 102
3. I think this story is overblown because if you are going into a marriage having trust issues then you should not be married at all. If you go into a marriage you have to be willing to trust your spouse with your life, and always be honest about everything you do especially financial stuff.
4. The top financial betrayal to me is when the husband said he made a certain income but he actually was making way more than what he had said. This is the biggest problem because it shows he really does not trust his wife and it makes me question why they are even married. It is also a problem because it shows that he is a liar. The second one is when the wife discovered gambling and spent all the money. This is not a good thing because it shows her and her husband do not have good communication with each other.
5. I think the story about the husband claiming he makes less than what he actually makes has a connection to "Twenty Grand" because her husband also lied to her and did not tell her how much the coin was actually worth when she thought it was less.

"Wings" Summaries

The American Myth
This essay is about the so called American dream. She talks about how people use it as a motivational things. She talks about that Americans only want to belong in this world and be up with the trends. Such as having an apple phone . Today people do not look up to our American heroes as much, we look up more to actors and celebrities. Reaching the American Dream just gives people hope it is not necessarily a certain dream where you have to have a certain job, so she states that it can not be crushed.

No Imprisonment for Nonviolent Crimes
She talks about how the world is faced with a large number of imprisoned people. There are a lot of prison overcrowding. She is saying that a lot of the spaces in the prisons are being used for nonviolent crimes, when we should be using those spaces for violent crimes. Some prisons are so packed that they have three people bunkbeds. Locking up prisoners for longer periods of time will reduce the bad things that happen in the real world.  The United States should be picky about who they send to prison.

1. Elizabeth despair of formulating a precise definition of the middle class is because the numbers are rare, she used the mainstream Americans to define the middle class.
2. According to Warren, the increase in income for median earning families over the past generation has not improved the quality of life because families are spending there money more on their wants versus their needs.
3. I believe my family is medium class family, we are not rich, but we are able to take vacations when we want to and buy things that we want. I am basing this answer on what my parents make.
4. Warren does a good job at shedding light on my families circumstances because sometimes I feel that my family spends money on things we do not really need, although, my parents work very hard for everything they buy I still do no think that some things are as necessary.
5. Waren and Schor differ because Schor talks about the middle to upper class household and Waren talks about the more statistical side to it where as some families can not afford as much as other families.

Page 82
3.  The example I find convincing is when it says "We may not trust god anymore, but we do trust cash". I think that this is convincing because today people depend so much on money to make them happy and live a good life. They are saying that money can buy us things to protect ourselves, without money we would have nothing.
4.I agree with this statement that money keeps us to busy to worry about death because we focus so  much f our time on going to school to get a good education to have a good career, which gives us no time to think about things like death. There is to much going on in peoples lives like stress and pressure to have a good job to make good money to even thing about death.
